Has Socialism Ever Worked?
I watched this argument on Twitter and the argument that Socialism has never worked seems to me, as a reformed socialist, to be a sound one...

Depends what you mean by 'socialism'.

It could be argued that a form of socialism has been working relatively successfully in Western Europe for the past 70 years. The state is unrecognisable to what pertained previously in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, etc.

Many people in Australia might regard the Whitlam government of 1972 to 1975 as a socialist one.
Which in hindsight I would regard as successful

Of course they tried to remove a US military spying base at Pine Gap so the CIA and the Queens representative managed to sack them.

Re: Has Socialism Ever Worked?
I'm interested in this because I grew up a socialist full of theoretical ideals but quickly realised that human beings survived by taking care of themselves and their families throughout history. Socialism to me, is based on the hive mentality where we all care for our neighbours...

The problem is that human's will always take of themselves first unless forced to do otherwise. So socialism has to control and that is evident in the Labour party today with Momentum taking control. All in the name of greater democracy of course. But then the leaders get too much control and....

No long before that. I realised that you either wait for "big brother" to take care of you or go do it yourself...

I'm a firm believer that we need the combination of left and right, socialism and capitalism, carrot and stick, etc. The challenge is balancing the two seemingly opposite agendas. That's what evolution has done with humans; we have a balance of the selfish greedy side, which has been important for our survival, and the community spirit of helping one another for the benefit of the tribe. Both are as valid and important as each other.

I cannot stand people that place then selves firmly on one side and insist they are right and the other side are wrong. I like my politics like my aeroplanes, with a left and right wing. Who can say which of those two wings are best?

Re: Has Socialism Ever Worked?
Yes.

Market failure occurs all the time, and either direct intervention or regulation to correct imbalances are all over the shop.

This is probably what a bell end like you would call 'socialism'.

Entirely correct and in fact you back up my own point. Both (in fact all three) main political parties in the UK have over the past 70 years merely squabbled about the precise mix of capitalism and socialism, not that some sort of blend shouldn't exist.

I'm not sure that's entirely true with Corbyn's mob, by the way.
